If you can run workflow and people in an accountancy firm, you are moving into one of the most valuable profiles in the SME practice market. Firms are under pressure to deliver more work, faster, while adapting to automation and AI, and the people who can turn that pressure into an organised, motivated team are standing out.

Accountancy leaders overwhelmingly see technology and automation as the future of their business models, yet very few are restructuring to really capture the gains. One recent study reported that 85% of accounting leaders expect AI to improve their firm’s business model, but only a small minority are planning a full transformation to make that happen 85% of firm leaders see future in automation, only 17% plan to transform. In that gap sit Practice Managers and senior operations‑minded accountants who can turn intent into day‑to‑day reality.

If you already own workflow, people management and client deadlines, this is the moment to treat that as a career specialism, not just “stuff you do on top of the day job”.

We are currently recruiting a Practice Manager role with an independent accountancy firm in Sutton Coldfield that shows how far this brief has moved. It sits at £45,000–£55,000 and the focus is wide‑ranging: full responsibility for day‑to‑day organisation of the practice, oversight of workflow across accounts, corporation tax, personal tax, VAT, bookkeeping, payroll, CIS and company secretarial work, and ownership of staff supervision and support.

This is not an admin or office management post. The Practice Manager is expected to allocate work, manage workloads and priorities, and make sure client, HMRC and Companies House deadlines are consistently met. That means monitoring outstanding work, spotting delays, chasing client information and following agreed actions through to completion. The role reports directly to a Director and is framed as part of the firm’s long‑term management structure.

If your current job description sounds similar, but you are not being recognised or rewarded at that level, you have a strong case to reposition yourself as a Practice Manager or Operations Lead when you next move.

Alongside that, we are seeing senior client‑facing roles fold in heavier leadership and change mandates. One Senior Manager brief we are working on in the North West combines a substantial portfolio with clear expectations around mentoring a team, driving business growth and stepping into a Regional Lead role over the next two to three years. The pathway to Director is explicit, and the firm is looking for someone who can shape culture and performance, not just sign off files.

At the top end of the advisory spectrum, a Director role in an Office of the CFO team in London asks candidates to act as outsourced CFO for a portfolio of PE‑backed and owner‑managed businesses, while also leading finance transformation work: systems, process streamlining, reporting and controls. Again, the through‑line is clear. Firms want commercially aware accountants who can run complex workflows, lead people and improve how finance gets done.

Technology investment is intensifying the need for strong Practice Managers rather than replacing them. Large firms are already rolling out enterprise‑scale AI tools in assurance, reshaping how audits and related workflows are managed EY launches enterprise-scale agentic AI to redefine the audit experience for the AI era | EY - Global. Smaller practices are following with their own mix of automation, cloud accounting and practice management platforms.

Vendors highlight how custom practice management systems can run into substantial six‑figure investments for mid‑ to large‑sized firms How Much Does Accounting Practice Management Software Development Cost in Australia 2026?. When a firm spends that much on technology, they cannot afford for it to sit under‑used. They need someone who understands both the work and the people doing it to design workflows, train the team and make sure the tools actually improve client delivery.

This is where your experience reading bottlenecks, rebalancing workloads, and coaching colleagues becomes commercially critical. If you can connect new systems to better turnaround times and fewer deadline panics, you are speaking directly to partners’ priorities.

For senior accountants and Practice Managers, there is no single public number that captures “the going rate” for every firm and region. Instead, firms and candidates are leaning on broader salary guides and real‑time hiring data to frame expectations.

Several recent publications pull together salary and hiring trends across UK accountancy and finance practice roles, based on thousands of placements and live vacancies. These include the 2026 accountancy and finance practice salary guide from Reed Accountancy & finance practice salary guide 2026 - Reed.com, the 2026 UK Salary Guide from Robert Half [PDF] 2026 UK Salary Guide](https://view.contentlink.roberthalfonline.com/emea/vcv/cve-sg26-brochure-uk-eng.pdf) and the Robert Walters 2026 Salary Survey Salary Survey Guide UK 2026 | Pay Trends - Robert Walters.

Taken together, these guides show employers competing hardest for people who pair technical competence with operational impact. They also underline how quickly pay can move when you step from pure production into roles that drive revenue, operations and business continuity.

In our own live work, a Practice Manager brief at £45,000–£55,000 in a regional location is a strong signal that firms will pay for someone who can genuinely own workflow, people and deadlines. If that aligns with your responsibilities today, it is worth sanity‑checking your package against the ranges in those guides and the roles you see advertised, then deciding whether your next move should be lateral or a step up.

Beyond job adverts, one of the clearest signals about candidate demand comes from direct outreach. Over recent searches, we have identified 6,320 accounting and advisory professionals and approached 3,085 of them about specific opportunities. Of those contacted, 36% opened the approach and 15% replied, with 6.9% expressing interest in a role and 3.1% booking a further conversation.

Focusing specifically on Accounts & Business Advisory, we ran 12 searches, identified 596 professionals and approached 267. Within that group, 16.1% replied and 6.4% were interested enough to engage with a live opportunity.

These are not market‑wide figures, but they do show something important for your own decision‑making. A meaningful share of experienced accountants are prepared to have a conversation when a role is aligned with their skills and ambitions. If you are already carrying Practice Manager responsibilities or leading change in your team, you are not alone in wondering what else is out there.

If you recognise yourself in these profiles, the next step is to present your experience in a way that matches what SME and mid‑market firms are trying to buy.

First, surface your workflow wins. Be specific about how you have allocated work across accounts, tax, VAT, bookkeeping and payroll, how you have tracked progress against HMRC and Companies House deadlines, and how you have reduced bottlenecks or rework. Partners read that as risk reduction and higher capacity.

Second, give your people leadership real weight. Talk about how many people you supervise, how you run workflow or review meetings, how you handle under‑performance and how you develop juniors. The more you show you can stabilise and grow a team, the more credible you are for roles with a succession or regional leadership angle.

Third, connect your work to technology and change. Even if your firm has not adopted advanced AI, you almost certainly use practice management, bookkeeping and tax platforms. Point to examples where you improved how those tools were used, helped implement new systems, or used data from them to improve decision‑making.

Finally, stay close to market data. Use the published guides Accountancy & finance practice salary guide 2026 - Reed.com, [[PDF] 2026 UK Salary Guide](https://view.contentlink.roberthalfonline.com/emea/vcv/cve-sg26-brochure-uk-eng.pdf), Salary Survey Guide UK 2026 | Pay Trends - Robert Walters and live adverts to frame your expectations, then sense‑check them in conversation with recruiters who are actively placing Practice Managers, Senior Managers and outsourced CFOs.

If you already own workflow and people in your current firm, the market is telling you that you have more options than your job title might suggest. The next move is to treat those responsibilities as your main value proposition, and choose roles that recognise them.
