Quality & Technical Director

Our client is one of the largest independent accountancy firms in the South West, with a multi-office presence across the region and South Wales.

The Technical Director will be the firm's central, authoritative point of expertise on all technical matters. Working closely with the Technical Partner and Technical Committee, you will play a pivotal role in upholding the firm's commitment to exceptional audit quality, rigorous compliance and the consistent application of professional standards.

The role covers the ongoing development, implementation and monitoring of the firm's technical frameworks, alongside providing timely guidance and support to colleagues at all levels.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Standards

  • Work with the Technical Partner and Technical Committee to keep the firm up to date with developments in financial reporting, auditing standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion audit quality by driving the design, implementation and monitoring of robust quality control procedures.
  • Lead the maintenance and continuous enhancement of the firm's System of Quality Management (SOQM), ensuring compliance with ISQM 1 and related standards.

Training, Development & Knowledge Management

  • Support the development and delivery of strategic training programmes for audit and accounting teams, in partnership with HR and external providers.
  • Maintain and enhance the firm's technical knowledge base, including audit methodologies, financial reporting guidance and technical resources.
  • Produce clear, concise technical updates, bulletins and guidance on emerging issues in auditing, financial reporting and regulation.

Internal Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Liaison

  • Support the Technical Partner in preparing for and managing annual compliance reviews and internal quality monitoring.
  • Help coordinate regulatory inspections and manage the firm's reporting obligations to professional and regulatory bodies.
  • Work with the Ethics Partner on technical and ethical queries, including matters relating to the FRC Ethical Standard and relevant Codes of Ethics.

Systems, Tools & Technology

  • Liaise with software providers and internal IT to ensure audit and accounting systems are effective, compliant and aligned with best practice.
  • Contribute to the evaluation, selection and implementation of new systems and tools.

Advisory & Horizon Scanning

  • Act as an accessible point of contact for staff seeking guidance on technical, financial reporting and audit matters.
  • Develop and implement a structured approach to horizon scanning so the firm is prepared for forthcoming changes in standards, legislation and regulatory expectations.
